Pipe Bursting Repair Method
The term ‘pipe bursting repair’ might sound like an oxymoron, but it’s an established method of trenchless sewer line repair that was originally developed in the UK during the 1970s. Since then, the international market for trenchless repair has grown exponentially and is now a viable and preferred method of repair for North American water, sewer and gas industries.
So what exactly is pipe bursting? This type of trenchless sewer line repair involves drilling two small holes — an insertion pit and a receiving pit, one on either end of the broken lateral pipe. This involves inserting a new pipe in the insertion pit (one that is the same diameter or larger than the broken one) and pulling it through with a cable from the receiving pit.
While the new pipe is getting pulled along the existing pipeline, the older pipe is broken with a hydraulic or pneumatic bursting tool. This method is also known as pipe pulling.
Benefits of Trenchless Repair
When traditional trenching is used to repair a broken sewer line, it’s a massive undertaking which often requires digging up driveways, sidewalks, landscaping and sometimes even digging up your street front and redirecting traffic in the process. You can imagine the restorative costs involved.
Here are a few benefits of ‘no-dig’ trenchless repair:
Most repairs can be done within 24 hours.
New pipes installed are the latest, industry-conforming pipes that are built to withstand tree root penetration, high levels of water pressure, and are resistant to corrosion.
As only two small holes are needed to perform pipe bursting, you don’t need to tear up driveways, sidewalks or landscaping.
Saves on restorative costs
You won’t need to worry about forking over large sums of money to repair your yard and sidewalks.
