Sue Sabol - Lenz on Business

Welcoming the new year with fresh business insights, Sue Sabol, co-owner of the award-winning Atlanta plumbing company Plumb Works, joined Jon Waterhouse on the December 31 episode of WSB’s radio show “Lenz on Business.” Plumb Works is a family-owned business led by Sue and Jerome Sabol. She discusses her journey working with a spouse, hiring challenges, career changes, and more.

Sue shared the history of Plumb Works and how she became involved with the company. In 2017, Sue and her husband, Jerome Sabol, purchased the company from her brother-in-law. Over the last six years, the company has continued to develop and grow with over 10 technicians, four apprentices, three service managers, and three office staff.

“My background has given me the opportunity to work with various personalities,” said Sue. “With different types of people at various levels, I would say. It’s all about building rapport, regardless of the industry.”

Transitioning from a corporate career to the plumbing industry, Sue realized her new role at Plumb Works would require her to embrace adaptability. She utilized her corporate background to contribute to the company's success.

“I was coming from a space where there was a lot of urgency,” shared Sue. “Every day it seemed to be a fire drill. When I came to Plumb Works, it was really nice to experience a different pace than corporate America.”

Separating work and family life can be difficult, especially when working with a spouse. Sue walks us through how she and Jerome have been able to establish clear boundaries, both personal and professional, to cultivate effective teamwork.

“What seems to be working for us is respecting each other's time,” said Sue. “I have to say the layout of our office really lends itself to that. Jerome has his own office where he can shut the door, and I am with our office staff.”

Sue closes the show by speaking on behavioral interviewing, a method aimed at understanding an individual's experiences and decision-making processes. Throughout the discussion, she touched on employee leadership and Plumb Works' goals for the new year.

Nothing puts the cold chill on the festive holiday season like a frozen or burst pipe. Frozen pipes are bad enough, but when they burst, the problem worsens and can easily lead to flood damage requiring costly repairs. This all-too-common occurrence affects an estimated 250,000 homes in America each year. And Georgia may be a hot bed for frozen pipes. According to a State Farm report released in 2023, Georgia topped the list of frozen pipe-related losses at $100 million (from August 2002-August 2023.) Plumb Works remains your go-to source for frozen or burst pipe calls in our service area. However, there are some simple tips you can apply to protect pipes in cold weather and help avoid a house call. Before the thermometer dips below freezing – that’s 32 degrees Fahrenheit – do the following:
