Summer is prime time for home renovations, and if you’re planning to update your plumbing, you’re not alone. But before you dive into those DIY projects or call in the pros, there are a few do’s and don’ts you should keep in mind to avoid costly mistakes and ensure your renovations go smoothly.

Do: Plan Ahead

The excitement of a renovation can make you want to jump in headfirst, but when it comes to plumbing, planning is key. Map out your renovation goals and consider how changes might impact your existing plumbing. Whether you’re moving a sink or installing a new shower, understanding the scope of work will help you avoid surprises down the line.

Don't: Ignore Local Codes

Before starting any work, familiarize yourself with local plumbing codes. These regulations are there to protect you and your home. Ignoring them can lead to fines or, worse, unsafe plumbing that could cause major issues in the future. Hiring a licensed plumber who knows these codes can save you headaches later on.

How to Find Local Plumbing Codes

You can find your state’s local plumbing codes by visiting your local government page, or you can call a local plumber for insight.

Do: Upgrade Old Pipes

If your home has older pipes, summer renovations offer the perfect opportunity to repipe. Materials like galvanized steel or polybutylene are prone to problems over time. Replacing them with modern, durable options such as copper or PEX piping can improve your home’s water quality and reduce the risk of leaks.

Don't: Skimp on Quality Materials

When it comes to plumbing, you get what you pay for. Cheap materials might save you money upfront, but they can lead to more problems and repairs in the long run. Invest in quality fixtures and pipes that will stand the test of time. It’s a decision your future self will thank you for.

Do: Consider Water Efficiency

If you’re upgrading your plumbing, think about water efficiency. Installing low-flow fixtures or a dual-flush toilet can help reduce water usage and lower your utility bills. Plus, these upgrades can make your home more environmentally friendly—something that’s becoming increasingly important to many homeowners.

Don't: Overlook Proper Ventilation

Good ventilation is essential for a healthy plumbing system, especially in humid areas like bathrooms. Without it, you could end up with mold, mildew, and even structural damage. Make sure your renovations include adequate ventilation to keep your home dry and safe.

Do: Get Professional Help When Needed

Even the most confident DIYer can run into trouble when dealing with plumbing. Don’t hesitate to call in a professional for complex jobs. It’s better to spend a little extra on expert help than to risk damaging your home’s plumbing system.

Don't: Forget About Future Access

While it might be tempting to conceal pipes and plumbing behind walls or floors, think about future access. Plumbing needs maintenance over time, and making sure you or a plumber can easily reach critical areas will save you a lot of trouble down the road.

Do: Keep Track of Future Plumbing Maintenance and Basic Fixes

Nothing puts the cold chill on the festive holiday season like a frozen or burst pipe. Frozen pipes are bad enough, but when they burst, the problem worsens and can easily lead to flood damage requiring costly repairs. This all-too-common occurrence affects an estimated 250,000 homes in America each year. And Georgia may be a hot bed for frozen pipes. According to a State Farm report released in 2023, Georgia topped the list of frozen pipe-related losses at $100 million (from August 2002-August 2023.) Plumb Works remains your go-to source for frozen or burst pipe calls in our service area. However, there are some simple tips you can apply to protect pipes in cold weather and help avoid a house call.
