Sewer lines need replacing? No one wants to deal with the hassle of a yard replete with trenches, piles of mud, and ruined grass. There’s an alternative out there that’s tried-and-true but still relatively under-the-radar: Trenchless sewer line replacement.

What is Trenchless Sewer Line Replacement?

Trenchless methods have been around for over a decade. They involve replacing existing sewer pipes without removing the old pipes. There are two primary kinds of trenchless replacements: Pipe Bursting and Pipe Lining.

Pipe Bursting

Pipe Bursting is the preferred method for trenchless sewer repair because it’s long lasting and cost effective. The process involves drilling two small holes then essentially threading a new pipe through the old pipe. As it’s threaded, the old pipe “bursts,” hence the name. Pipe bursting helps prevent the costly repairs that come with tearing up sod or removing expensive patio pavers to reach a broken pipe.

Pipe Lining

Pipe Lining is a process that also involves two holes (although it can sometimes be done with just one) and the threading of a flexible tube coated with resin. As the newly-threaded tube is inflated, the resin hardens and it becomes cured in place.

Both methods of trenchless sewer repair are ideal for mitigating tree root invasion, severely clogged pipes, corroded/leaky pipes, or other persistent issues. Although trenchless repairs aren’t necessarily less expensive than traditional pipe replacements, there are usually far fewer repair costs associated with the plumbing work itself (i.e. replacing landscaping, etc.)

Trenchless sewer work is the equivalent of minimally-invasive surgery. It’s relatively fast, extremely durable, and can save you thousands of dollars in restorative costs.
