Spring Rains & Your Drains: What to Know

Why is there Water in My Home?

In Atlanta, Spring comes beautiful blooms and the uprise of allergies, as well as weeks of rain. After the downpour has finally stopped and you start welcoming Summer, all is right in the world. But then one day you notice puddles in your basement when you’re doing some late Spring Cleaning. Is this something that you can put off and ignore? Not if you don’t want even bigger problems down the road. The puddles you’re seeing in your basement could very well be from a backed up sewer.

But how did this happen? Well, when you’re on a city sewage system and you get a lot of rain, the sewer lines that run through your community can overflow with excess water. If you’re familiar with a boomerang-style rollercoaster, then imagine that your home’s undesirable waste is the rider, and the excess water flow is the coaster. First, it will flow where it’s supposed to (out of and away from your house). Then, the excess water from heavy rain will disturb and stop the flow. There’s only one way for the sewage to go from there, and that’s back and into your house. If you’re thinking about saving some money and fixing this problem yourself, don’t. What looks like a small puddle to you could actually be really dangerous to mess with.

Be Aware of Hazards

There’s a lot of bacteria that resides in sewage. Trying to fix a backup like this will expose you to some pretty major diseases, not to mention the electrical and gas hazards that pop up with any home water leak. It’s best to leave things like sewer line repair & replacement to the professionals. If you mess something up, it won’t just be your home that’s affected.

Keep An Eye on Storm Drains

An overflowing storm drain can lead to flooding in your area. There are a few things that can prevent overflow before rains hit, like keeping debris clear of drain entrances. Things like trash and tree limbs can cause clogs if washed into a storm drain. A local Atlanta plumbing service like Plumb Works can handle the hassle of drain cleaning for your community and prevent water leaks in your home.

Sometimes being vigilant of small things can prevent large disasters down the road. Keeping up with your plumbing maintenance is always a good idea. Don’t DIY dangerous pipe repairs. Call a local plumber today at 404-524-1825.
