5 Ways You Can Be Involved with Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Plumb Works Inc • September 30, 2016

Taking the time to help the fight against breast cancer is important for everyone since we all have women in our lives whom may be impacted by it. Here are five ways you can get involved with the fight against breast cancer during the month of October.

breast cancer awareness

1 – Walk at the Making Strides of Atlanta Event on October 29

As the largest network of breast cancer awareness events, Making Strides is hosting a walk in Atlanta on October 29. Walkers are encouraged to create a team, join an existing team or walk as an individual to raise money and show support for breast cancer survivors and awareness. Making Strides helps the American Cancer Society by providing money for research funding, offering support to those impacted by breast cancer and raising the awareness for early detection to reduce the chances of developing breast cancer.

2 – Provide Safe Trips with Road to Recovery

Many people who need cancer treatment lack insufficient transport to get them to and from treatment. By volunteering with Road to Recovery, cancer patients in need of therapy can get safe, reliable rides with drivers who are donating their time and vehicles to help. Volunteering for this program is an excellent way to do good and get to know those battling cancers in your area.

3 – Volunteer with Reach to Recovery

Reach to Recovery has worked with the American Cancer Society for over 45 years. In that time, it has provided support to those facing positive cancer diagnoses, considering mastectomy or breast reconstruction or have undergone cancer treatment such as chemotherapy. Road to Recovery provides support by phone or in person to those who need it most.

4 – Donate a Car

If you have the means, the American Cancer Society accepts donations of cars. While your used car may seem like an old rust bucket, to the Cancer Society, it could help fund research, provide support for cancer patients and help with cancer education and early detection. Donating a car is also considered a tax deduction and you will receive a receipt for your donation in the mail.

5 – Locks of Love

Locks of Love is an exciting charity designed to help patients younger than 18 years old who have lost their hair either to chemotherapy or other illness treatments. In many cases, hairpieces and wigs are not designed for young children or teens, and they are only made in adult sizes. If you or someone in your family has healthy hair that is 10 inches or longer, find a Locks of Love approved salon near your home and donate your hair today to help a child or teen who is suffering from cancer. It’s a great show of support and will contribute to improving the confidence of a child or teen in need.

Whether you donate your time or money, getting involved with cancer research and awareness is a worthwhile cause, especially during October and Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Nothing puts the cold chill on the festive holiday season like a frozen or burst pipe. Frozen pipes are bad enough, but when they burst, the problem worsens and can easily lead to flood damage requiring costly repairs. This all-too-common occurrence affects an estimated 250,000 homes in America each year. And Georgia may be a hot bed for frozen pipes. According to a State Farm report released in 2023, Georgia topped the list of frozen pipe-related losses at $100 million (from August 2002-August 2023.) Plumb Works remains your go-to source for frozen or burst pipe calls in our service area. However, there are some simple tips you can apply to protect pipes in cold weather and help avoid a house call. Before the thermometer dips below freezing – that’s 32 degrees Fahrenheit – do the following:
