Budget Bathroom & Kitchen Remodeling Tips

Plumb Works Inc • July 29, 2016

Are you tired of looking at an old, outdated bathroom or kitchen? Then why not invest in your home and start a remodeling project? Not only does updating the look and feel of these rooms breathe new life into your home, but they can also significantly increase your home’s resale value when the time comes to sell your home.

Understandably, many homeowners are concerned about remodeling because of the high costs that are often associated with these projects. Below are a few easy ways to keep your budget for your DIY project in check and still feel satisfied with the results:

Create a Remodeling Plan

Before you start your remodeling project, take the time to plan it out beforehand. Unplanned remodeling projects can lead to skyrocketing costs due to unforeseen issues such as plumbing, re-cutting lumber, and replacing broken, damaged, or ill-fitting appliances and fixtures.

Your plan should be detailed and comprehensive, and should include everything from the location of the appliances, tubs, toilets, and sinks, to the location of cabinets, drawers, and light fixtures.

One of the easiest ways to save money is to maintain the existing layout of the room and keep the existing wall and doorway design. You can avoid the majority of the costs associated with remodeling if you don’t have to alter too much of the plumbing or electrical.

Consider Ways to Keep Costs Low

We know that homeowners worry about the expenses associated with a remodeling project, but by planning in advance and working out a budget for your project you can avoid a lot of the stress and headaches associated with this process.

Some things to keep in mind are:
  • The size and scope of your plan. Are you replacing a few key items, or changing the entire structure and layout of the space?
  • The purchase of new items. Are you replacing appliances, tubs, fixtures and lights? If you can, try and keep as many things as you can and “refresh” them with a new coat of paint or new handles.
  • Choose low-cost alternatives. Laminate countertops are cheaper than granite, for example.
  • How much you plan to DIY. Some aspects of a remodeling project such as drywalling can be DIY-ed, but you should invest in professional services such as plumbing and electrical.

Remodel Features Instead of Whole Rooms

An easy trick to making any bathroom or kitchen look brand new is to focus on the smaller details. By focusing on sprucing up existing items, you can slash the costs of your remodeling project in half or more. Just take a look at these ways you can breathe new life into a room:

  • New paint. Paint the room a new color, or add a feature wall in an attractive and eye-catching color to really wow guests.
  • Cabinets. Instead of installing all-new cabinets, give your existing ones a new coat of paint, change their appearance by making them look “distressed”, or add new knobs or handles.
  • Light fixtures. One of the easiest ways to change the look and feel of a room is to install new lighting. We recommend using eco-friendly bulbs with a soft, inviting light instead of fluorescent lighting.

Nothing puts the cold chill on the festive holiday season like a frozen or burst pipe. Frozen pipes are bad enough, but when they burst, the problem worsens and can easily lead to flood damage requiring costly repairs. This all-too-common occurrence affects an estimated 250,000 homes in America each year. And Georgia may be a hot bed for frozen pipes. According to a State Farm report released in 2023, Georgia topped the list of frozen pipe-related losses at $100 million (from August 2002-August 2023.) Plumb Works remains your go-to source for frozen or burst pipe calls in our service area. However, there are some simple tips you can apply to protect pipes in cold weather and help avoid a house call.
