Vacation Tips for Your Home

Plumb Works Inc • June 1, 2018

Although we enjoy our homes, traveling to a new city or experiencing a different place for a few days is always beneficial. But before you leave on your much-needed vacation, there are some things to consider for your home. Below is a list of tasks that should be completed before you head out on your next adventure:

summer vacation tips

Make the Home Look Occupied

While you’re out on your vacation, making the home look occupied is key. If the home looks vacant, that gives buglers more of a reason to try to enter the premises. A great way to accomplish this is through timed or motion-sensor lighting. This might give off the impression that someone is home. Also, if you’re vacationing for an extended amount of time, having the grass cut is very beneficial.

Take Care of Your Plumbing System

Before heading out on your adventure, your plumbing system needs a little TLC. Having a plumbing inspection prior to your vacation is key to ensuring everything is working properly. Another important step is to turn off water valves and turn down your water heater. Another recommendation is to run your garbage disposal with a half-cup of water and vinegar (this will help it stay clean and prevent any smells or mold). You can also pour some chlorine in your toilet to help prevent mold growth.

Check Electrical Components

Another great step before heading out on vacation is to unplug your appliances and devices to help prevent any electrical problems. You can also turn up your thermostat to 85 degrees, which will help you save money on energy bills. It’s also best to check your smoke detectors to ensure they’re working properly.

Other Important Steps

In case of any emergencies, it’s very beneficial to leave an emergency contact number with your neighbor. Also, things like taking out the trash and getting rid of perishable food should be high up on your priority list before you leave. Also, leave a spare set of keys outside of the home in case someone has to enter the premises for an emergency. Another measure to take is to shut off the water supply to your washing machine, and it’s important that you never leave the home when the dishwasher or washing machine is running!

Nothing puts the cold chill on the festive holiday season like a frozen or burst pipe. Frozen pipes are bad enough, but when they burst, the problem worsens and can easily lead to flood damage requiring costly repairs. This all-too-common occurrence affects an estimated 250,000 homes in America each year. And Georgia may be a hot bed for frozen pipes. According to a State Farm report released in 2023, Georgia topped the list of frozen pipe-related losses at $100 million (from August 2002-August 2023.) Plumb Works remains your go-to source for frozen or burst pipe calls in our service area. However, there are some simple tips you can apply to protect pipes in cold weather and help avoid a house call. Before the thermometer dips below freezing – that’s 32 degrees Fahrenheit – do the following:
