Plumb Works Service Manager, Josh Czerniak, Talks About Freezing Pipes and Answers Listeners’ Questions on WSB’s Radio Show “Atlanta Living” With Belinda Skelton

Plumb Works’ service manager, Josh Czerniak, appeared on WSB’s radio show “Atlanta Living” with host Belinda Skelton. Throughout the December 17 episode, he answered listeners’ questions, provided plumbing maintenance tips, and suggested DIY plumbing solutions.
Czerniak says the number one call Plumb Works gets after the holiday season is about blocked drains. He cautioned listeners to not put “leeks, noodles, or anything that can be really fine” down the garbage disposal. He also recommended listeners run water for at least 30 seconds after they’ve used the garbage disposal, to help keep their drains clear.
Later, Czerniak offered proactive steps listeners can take to ensure pipes don’t freeze, despite Atlanta experiencing some of the lowest temperatures they’ve seen in the last five years.
“When the temperatures get down into the twenties and even the teens, you’re gonna want to let the faucets drip at night [and] protect your outdoor spigots. If you have shut-off valves for them, shut them off and drain them down. They have little styrofoam protective guards you can get at any home [improvement] store to put over your spigots to insulate them.”
Czerniak also discussed what listeners can do if their pipes have frozen.
“A lot of times, we tell people to open up their cabinets if their pipes freeze and no water is coming out of the tap [because] they didn’t shut their water off, they forget to drain the system [...] that’ll help the warm air from inside the house hit the pipes and start to thaw them out.”
